Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
With Italian heritage we would love to visit Rome and that’s the place where it all started.
Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. Many Romans were converting to Christianity, but the Emperor Claudius II was a pagan who passed a law against all marriage.
According to legend St Valentine began to marry people in secret Christian ceremonies. He believed in the importance of love but was eventually jailed for his crimes against the Emperor.
While imprisoned, Valentine restored the sight of the jailor’s daughter. They formed a friendship and before he was executed he wrote her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine’.
Valentine was executed on 14 February in the year 270.
The power of massage therapy
Roll on another century and Roman baths and massages were a popular part of Roman culture. The massage process involved a bath, which was followed by a full body massage to stimulate circulation and loosen the joints. The Romans also used oils for an added benefit to the skin.
The Roman baths became quite fun and unruly and in the 4th century, the Roman Emperor Constantine forbids the use of public baths.
As you can see massage therapy has a long and fascinating history. It’s also the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day! Envy Day Spa Port Macquarie is rated as one of the top three day spas – book your massage therapy today to find out why.
